What are brake rotors and what role do they play in braking?
Brake rotors are large metal discs located inside of each wheel. The rotor is attached to the wheel by the car’s axle. Brake rotors are an essential part of the foundation of your car’s brake system. If the right friction levels are not right or the rotor surface is compromised, these complex systems will not operate properly.
Your car’s brake pad tightens on the rotor as the brake pedal is pressed, and pressure is exerted on the fluid in the master cylinder. This in turn activates the caliper housing in both pads, and the resulting friction transforms the forward momentum of the vehicle into heat. This heat is dispersed from the rotor and pad to the air around the wheel, slowing down wheel rotation, which ultimately stops the movement of the vehicle.
Brake rotors need to be inspected and checked for warping or rust during every brake pad replacement.
